The Heart Nebula

also known as IC 1805, is a beautifully structured emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. Its characteristic heart-like shape gives the nebula its name. Located approximately 7,500 light-years from Earth, it is a vast stellar nursery where new stars are born from clouds of gas and dust. At its centre lies a young open star cluster whose intense radiation sculpts and energises the surrounding nebula. This powerful interaction causes the gas to glow and reveals complex patterns across the region.

 

This image comprises 13 hours of exposures, combining 156 individual 5 minute sub-exposures. These were captured over 7 nights between August and September 2022 from a back garden in Prestwick (Scotland) with a dedicated astrophotography setup. The data was recorded using specialised filters (Ha, OIII and SII) to reveal faint details and structures that are otherwise invisible.

The Heart Nebula spans almost 200 light-years—so vast that if it replaced the Orion Nebula, it would appear around 15 times larger in our sky. Hidden within its glowing clouds, new stars are continually forming, while the most massive among them flood the nebula with intense radiation, carving enormous cavities into the surrounding gas.

 

The beautiful heart shape we see is only temporary. Over millions of years, the very stars born within the nebula will continue to reshape it, dispersing the gas from which they formed. Eventually, the nebula will fade away, leaving behind a family of stars travelling together through our galaxy.

 

When you look at the Heart Nebula, you’re witnessing a brief chapter in an ongoing cosmic cycle—where stars are born, transform their surroundings, and prepare the raw material from which future generations of stars and planets will one day emerge.
