
The California Nebula
is named for its long, narrow shape reminiscent of the state of California. This striking emission nebula is located in the constellation Perseus, approximately 1,000 light-years from Earth. It glows with a soft red hue from ionised hydrogen gas, creating a dramatic backdrop for the stars scattered across its region. Capturing the California Nebula allows us to glimpse the beauty and complexity of star-forming regions within our galaxy.
This image combines about 20 hours of exposures, containing 121 individual 10 minute sub-exposures. These were captured over 16 nights between December 2023 and March 2024 from a back garden in Prestwick (Scotland) with a dedicated astrophotography setup. Specialised filters (Ha, OIII and SII) were used to capture different wavelengths of light, helping to reveal fine details and structure that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

The California Nebula is so enormous that it stretches across almost 100 light-years of space. If our own Solar System were placed inside it, even the orbit of the most distant planets would be almost unimaginably tiny by comparison.
Although it appears bright in long-exposure photographs, the nebula is completely invisible to the unaided eye for most people. The glowing hydrogen gas is simply too faint for human vision, meaning cameras can reveal a hidden Universe that our eyes can never experience on their own.
Every part of this vast cloud is slowly drifting and changing over time. The scene captured here is just one fleeting moment in a process that has been unfolding for millions of years and will continue long after humanity is gone.
