
The Lion Nebula
is a stunning nebula located in the constellation of Cassiopeia, known for its complex shapes and shadows that resemble a lion’s mane. This celestial formation is an emission nebula, with regions of dust and gas that obscure background stars, creating striking contrasts against the glowing gas and the wider cosmos.
This image combines about 34 hours of exposures, containing 202 individual 10 minute sub-exposures. These were captured over 9 nights between August and September 2024 from a back garden in Prestwick (Scotland) with a dedicated astrophotography setup.

The dark lanes winding through the Lion Nebula are not empty space. They are vast clouds of cosmic dust that block the light from the glowing gas behind them, creating the striking shapes and shadows seen in this image. Those tiny dust grains are the same raw material from which future stars and planets can eventually form.
Over millions of years, gravity, radiation and stellar winds slowly shape these enormous clouds, creating patterns that often remind us of familiar objects and animals—such as the profile of a lion. It’s a wonderful example of how our brains naturally recognise shapes, even across the immense distances of space.
Perhaps the most remarkable thought is that this beautiful cloud is part of an ongoing story. The same dust drifting through this nebula today may one day become new stars, new planetary systems and perhaps even the building blocks of future life elsewhere in our galaxy.
