The Christmas Tree Cluster

is a young open cluster, with stars estimated to be only a few million years old, named after its resemblance to a decorated Christmas tree. It is part of the star-forming region NGC 2264 in the constellation Monoceros. The cluster is surrounded by several stunning nebulae, including the Fox Fur Nebula, Snowflake Cluster, and Cone Nebula. They are about 2,300–2,600 light-years away from Earth.

This image combines 17.5 hours of exposure from 105 individual 10-minute sub-exposures. These were captured over 9 nights between November 2023 and April 2024 from a back garden in Prestwick (Scotland) using a dedicated astrophotography setup. Specialised filters (Ha, OIII and SII) were used to capture different wavelengths of light, revealing details and structure not visible to the naked eye. I had planned to collect additional data, but weather conditions unfortunately didn’t allow for this.

My image of the Christmas Tree Cluster was chosen by the BBC Sky at Night Magazine as their Photo of the Month (https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com). The article below was published in the July 2024 edition of their magazine. Capturing this region was both challenging and rewarding, and seeing it recognised in print made it feel even more special.

 

It was a big surprise to me and I felt absolutely chuffed. I’m always very critical of my own work and know there is still so much to improve. Having this image selected as Photo of the Month gave me a real boost in confidence, and I’m very grateful for it.

Although the Christmas Tree Cluster appears timeless, you’re actually seeing one of the youngest star clusters in our galaxy. Most of its stars are only a few million years old—less than one thousandth the age of our Sun.

 

If our own Solar System had formed here instead of 4.6 billion years ago, Earth would not yet exist. There would be no oceans, no plants, no dinosaurs and no humans. Our Sun would still be surrounded by the swirling disc of gas and dust from which the planets were only just beginning to emerge.

 

When you look at the Christmas Tree Cluster, you’re witnessing a scene that our own Solar System may once have resembled billions of years ago—a brief but beautiful stage in the long story of how stars, planets and eventually life come to exist.
